Dr. Graham Brown co-founded Animalcare Veterinary Hospital with his wife Dr. Katalin Brown in 1991. When asked what inspired him to become a veterinarian, Dr. Brown says, “Animals bring peace to my life. From my pre-teen years I have treasured my relationships with them and they have been at my side when there was no one else. Animals are truly God’s gift to us all and I am honoured to take care of them.” Originally from Kingston, Mandeville and Runaway Bay, Dr. Brown entered Szent István University, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences in Budapest, Hungary, in 1977, which is one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world. In 1982, he graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He also holds a Ph.D. in Virology from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom; certification in Veterinary Practice Administration from the American Animal Hospital Association; certification in Small Animal Ultrasound Diagnostics from Universal Seminars Inc. in New York; and certification in Warm Water Fish Diseases from the University of Florida.
Dr. Brown’s areas of particular professional interest include ultrasonography and in recent times, equine medicine. He is a past president of the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association (JVMA), an executive member of the JVMA, and a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society.
Dr. Brown has a keen interest in horse racing. “I was invited to serve as a racing commissioner in 2010, which got me involved in the Sport of Kings (horse racing)” he says. “I currently part own a number of racehorses, and was fortunate enough to have been a part-owner of Mark My Word, which won the Jamaica Derby in 2010. Dr Brown is currently President of the Jamaica Racehorse Owners Association.
Dr. Brown and his wife Dr. Katalin Brown, a veterinarian and the other co-owner of the Hospital, have one teen-aged daughter named Jessica born in 1998. Dr. Brown describes Jessica’s hobbies as driving her mom and dad crazy, going on Facebook, watching too much television, and spending too much time doing everything her parents don’t want her to do. Their pet animal family includes a crazy cat residing at the Hospital and 3 dogs at home.
