Vaccines – Safe & Effective Disease Prevention
We believe that vaccinations are the cornerstone of your pet’s preventative health care plan. Advances in veterinary immunology have made diseases that once were fatal to pets easily preventable. Today, many immunizations and preventative treatments are available that did not exist just a few years ago. We always tailor your pet’s vaccination schedule according to his or her needs, which is based on your pet’s lifestyle, environment, and other risk factors. Due to the fact that there are a large percentage of unvaccinated dogs in Jamaica, the reservoir of disease-causing pathogens is high. Leptospirosis is also prevalent in Jamaica and for dogs that are at high risk of contracting this disease we recommend bi-annual booster vaccinations.

Birds, Pocket Pets & Exotics
Animalcare Veterinary Hospital is also very proud of the wellness services we are able to offer our clients who have birds, pocket pets or exotics. These animals’ healthcare needs are often quite unique and require a veterinary practice with the experience and expertise to ensure they live long, healthy and happy lives.
In the wild, many of these animals have developed strategies to conceal illness or injuries as a survival technique to avoid predators. As a result, their medical problems often go unnoticed for too long. By the time the owner recognizes that there is a problem with his or her exotic pet, the condition is often extremely serious.
This is why we strongly recommend regular physical examinations to check for health problems as well as annual monitoring to check for nutritional and husbandry-related conditions. With regular veterinary medical examinations—two per year is recommended—problems are often diagnosed before they become serious medical conditions.
In particular, we welcome our clients who have pet birds. We offer avian nebulization for a range of respiratory diseases as well as basic wing and nail clippings, beak trimming, treatment of skin conditions, internal medicine (diet selection, organ profiles, blood cell count, and more), surgery, egg binding, heated/oxygen chamber, X-rays, and antimicrobial therapy.
After acquiring your new bird, exotic or pocket pet, a complete veterinary examination is also strongly recommended. This exam includes a thorough physical examination, nutritional consultation, disease screening, and laboratory testing if necessary.
Reproductive Health & Counseling
Animalcare Veterinary Hospital has taken a lead in helping Jamaica control populations of dogs and cats through its many spay and neuter programs.
However, we are also able to offer our clients a full range of reproductive services and counseling. Whether you are an experienced breeder or breeding your pet for the first time, we can help, from initial planning and consultation all the way through birth. In particular, obstetric care and counseling will provide the best chance for maximizing litter size as well as maintaining the health of the mother and litter.
Our reproductive services include:
If your pet becomes ill or you suspect there may be something wrong with him or her, we cover all areas of internal medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, endocrinology, and others.
Our internal medicine services include:
Microchipping: Reliable International Pet ID
Does your pet have a microchip? Each year, millions of pets go missing and many don’t make it back home. Microchipping your pet is a safe, simple and effective way to prevent this tragedy. About the size of a grain of rice, identification microchips are encoded with your pet’s vital information and implanted beneath your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades.
Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country and around the world are equipped with special scanners capable of reading these microchips. The information in the chip is used to reunite you with your pet.
Animalcare Veterinary Hospital uses the AVID (American Veterinary Identification Devices) microchip system. AVID is recognized not only across the United States, but throughout South and Central America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
House Calls & Pickup/Return Service
As a convenience to our clients with busy schedules or those who may have difficulty traveling to our practice with pets, we offer house-calls for basic medical care such as vaccinations, de-worming, etc.
For the treatment of more complicated conditions, we recommend our pickup/return service if you are unable to bring your pet to our facility.
Animalcare Veterinary Hospital has zoned Kingston and its environs into three areas and charges for a house-call visit or its pickup/return service are based on the zone in which your home is located.
